About

Built on expertise.
Driven by meaning.

Beyond Translation was founded on a simple belief: that language should never be a barrier to justice, healthcare, or opportunity. For over 15 years, we've put that belief into practice across some of the most demanding environments in the UK.

Where Beyond Translation began

Beyond Translation was established in North London with a clear purpose: to provide language services that genuinely serve people — not just tick a compliance box. From the beginning, we focused on sectors where the stakes are highest: courts, hospitals, police stations and community organisations working with some of the UK's most vulnerable populations.

What started as a specialist interpreting service grew into a full-service language provider covering translation, transcreation, easy-read materials, audio transcription and interpreter training. Today we support the NHS, HM Courts and Tribunals Service, the National Crime Agency, CAFCASS, HM Prison Service and dozens of local councils and private organisations.

Our founding principle has never changed: every person, regardless of the language they speak, deserves to be understood fully and accurately — whether they are in a courtroom, a hospital ward, a police interview, or a prison hearing room.

A practitioner, not just a provider

Background & Experience

With over 15 years of active experience spanning court interpreting, police interview support and community health translation, Rakesh brings a level of sector knowledge that most language agencies simply cannot offer. He has worked directly in Crown Court proceedings, PACE interviews, NHS consultations and prison hearings — and that hands-on experience informs every aspect of how Beyond Translation operates.

Having worked across South Asian language communities in London, he developed a specialist understanding of not just the linguistics, but the cultural dynamics that affect communication in sensitive and high-stakes settings.

The Training Programme

Recognising a gap in the quality of interpreter training available, Rakesh developed an in-house certified training programme for interpreters — now delivered to agencies, local councils and organisations with multilingual workforce needs. The ICIT2 course includes a unique live court visit on Day Two, something most training programmes do not offer.

Philosophy

Rakesh's approach has always been that literal translation is a low bar. True language service means understanding who your audience is, what they need to comprehend, and why the communication matters — then delivering something that actually achieves that. It's why Beyond Translation introduced audience-tested easy-read translations long before it became sector practice.

Our values in practice

01

Precision Over Speed

In legal, police and healthcare settings, accuracy is non-negotiable. We never compromise verbatim fidelity — in PACE interviews, court proceedings or evidential transcriptions, every word matters.

02

Cultural Intelligence

Language lives inside culture. We factor in community context, register and audience literacy in every piece of work — because a technically correct translation that lands wrong serves no one.

03

Professional Accountability

All our interpreters are DBS-checked, qualified and carry professional indemnity. We operate with full confidentiality protocols as standard — not as an optional extra.

04

Raising the Standard

Our in-house training programme exists because we believe the whole sector benefits when interpreters are better trained. Improving the profession is part of our mission.

05

Accessibility for All

Our easy-read translation approach was built around a conviction that clear communication is a right, not a privilege. We test our translations with real audiences and refine until they genuinely work.

06

Long-Term Partnership

We don't treat clients as one-off transactions. Our most valued relationships are long-term — built on consistent quality, reliable availability and genuine understanding of each organisation's needs.
